SheDrinksLattes Presents: Art From The 90's

Self-Portrait

Self Portrait, 1990
This was an excersize in self portraitry. After doing this one, I went on to do several, most of which I threw out. I did that to a lot of work. I didn't want them around to represent me.

Doc Pomus

Doc Pomus, 1991
At Art Center, we were visited by Fred Woodward from Rolling Stone Magazine, and some artists, which included one of my then favorite working illustrators/painters, Philip Burke. In the workshop that they gave, we were to pick a subject or character and create an illustration for a make believe article that would be published in RS. Somehow, I came across and chose Doc Pomus.. maybe in was offered up, I can't remember. But I remember, being frozen half way through, because I had gone to talk to Philip Burke, and he just dismissed the piece saying I used too much WHITE. He was arrogant, and indifferent. And for a young artist that looked up to him, it really turned me off. Off of him, off of illustration and the business. So I started to pursue the more independent minded art and thinking of fine art.

Viege

Viege Traube, 1992
This painting went with an article I wrote for a now defunct magazine called 2029. A dear friend of mine, Peter S Foersten, the creator of the magazine asked me to go sit with Viege and do a portrait. I was to go, as an illustration, with an article that she was to write about herself, her life. But as time went on, in producing the magazine, Viege aged, and it became too difficult to get her to write the story... so Peter, asked me, One Year after I did the painting, to write about my experience when I met her, and he would put that with the illustration into the magazine. Both Viege and Peter are no longer around, and I feel so blessed to have met them and spent time with them. They were indeed spirited souls.

Tribeca Kids

The TriBeCa Kids, 1995
I used to live in an apartment, loft with 3 other girls. Above us lived a family, with these two great kids. I only baby sat for them once or twice, but they came down to our place several times, as one of my roommates baby-sat them quite often. Eventually, as I got to get to know them, I took their photo, and they sat for this painting a couple of times.
